This happens in many, many older homes. It’s nothing to be nervous about. You can do a number of cosmetic fixes such as level your joists and staircase, but you’ll probably need to do some work in the basement to make sure there is no further settlement. In the basement….Do the beams look solid? Are there enough columns supporting the beams? Does the brick or stone wall have enough mortar? You can jack up the house which will take care of any settlement issues. If you haven’t done any renovations yet, now is the time to do it as your plaster will crack and molding, etc will still need to be evened out. Or not. We just left ours as is. It adds charm. Yeah, that’s it. Charm. If it’s just the staircase, that can be leveled and rebuilt by a staircase company.

Our stairs do the same and our inspector said the same thing as yours did. I’m curious as to what the solution to fix it would be – please share when you find out.
