Example of bathroom with shower and no tub

Nice pic but the mis-matched towels on display are completely madening.

HBranty asked about this.  My showers are shaped to fit the space available.  This is a larger bathroom, but I waterproof the whole room, so the position of glass panels and doors are also configured for the best use of space in a smaller bathroom.

More bathrooms should be built this way, waterproofing rhe whole floor space and installing a floor drain. makes for a much larger roomy space.

Thanks Dave.   The reason barrier-free showers are not more common is the continued use of obsolete lead pans.  Lead is poison in paint and plumbing, yet still described in the code for shower pans.  Lead (or vinyl) pans (pan liners) are a folded in to a sort of box and part-filled with a thick, porous layer of sandy concrete.  They get waterlogged and leaky.  You can’t easily install a pan under the whole bathroom floor.  The sheets don’t come that big.  Pans are complicated, unreliable, no longer necessary, not required.  In the bathroom above, I used a waterproof membranes under the tiled floor, wall to wall and up the walls to the height of the shower head, even under the window sill.  All the water goes down the drain.   It is a much healthier way, and easier to clean.

While I have to admit that this approach has some advantages-and it has been used throughout Europe since the invention of the water mixing battery, the traditional American way with water dripping only onto the limited area of the bath-tub or shower pan yields much more clean space, with dry walls (except the mentioned before) which can be decorated to owner’s taste. Thus the bathroom is much more than a wet utility space and gives more opportunities to express someone’s individuality. US has always been a leader in residential hygiene and living comfort, lets try something else from the Europeans, not their wet, steamy damp bathrooms, the water dripping through your feet to the floor drain, carrying… (well, I’ll not mention this) 🙂
