Fire extinguisher for boiler room
Does anyone know the detailed requirements for a fire extinguisher in the boiler room? I have heard it has to be tagged and inspected. Do extinguishers sold in, say, NYC Home Depots have those tags or is this an inspection that has to be done periodically on site? What does this typically cost (a.) extinguisher and b.) inspection). If it makes a difference, it is a 3 family bldg. thanks as always.

According to the DOB (http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/html/development/boiler_merger_faq.shtml) since my building is less than 6 units and the boiler is less than 350,000 BTU, I am not required to do the annual inspection. This is consistent with what I have received from the City in the triennial boiler registration information. I am still unsure about the fire extinguisher inspection. I was told the unit needs to be inspected every six months, implying there is more to it than simply buy a 40-b:c or a 60-b:c and hanging it outside the boiler room. I am wondering if that rule also impacts buildings above X units or boilers above a certain size. Anyone know? Thanks.

Oh and you need an annual boiler inspection that can be done by any boiler/plumbing place. They look for things like you should have fresh air intake, no storage in room, switch labeled, self closing door, fire extinguisher etc. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/downloads/pdf/annual_boiler_insp_review_list.pdf

The fire extinguisher has to be OUTSIDE of the boiler room, right by the entrance/exit. This would suffice. Either 40-b:c or a 60-b:c http://www.homedepot.com/p/Kidde-PRO-340-3-A-40-B-C-Fire-Extinguisher-21005782/100558332#.UoFrKeL3Nww
