Electric work post-fire
I’m hoping I can get clarification on what a “point” is and what it costs to fix each point. We had a fire and our insurance settlement is allotting approx $100 per “point.” A contractor we interviewed, who suggested we hire his insured electrician directly, said the electrician charges between $160-$180 per point. The electricity is not working in our kitchen (among other rooms). Of course, there are numerous outlets and light switches. What does it entail to fix the electric and how does that translate into “points” and prices? Is $100 per point realistic? We want to make sure we’re not getting low-balled by the insurance company’s builder. Thank you.

I just went through getting bids for electrical work. The prices I am getting are roughly $175-225 per point to add new outlets in plaster and lathe walls. This does not include running new circuits if necessary.

Arkady may be talking about changing the grounding or otherwise upgrading an existing point. I don’t know how extensive your fire damage is and whether your electrician will need to run new lines back to the box, but if that is the case, your contractor’s estimate sounds correct.

A “point” is where wires come out of the wall. It can be an outlet with plugs or it can end in a light fixture. I have always heard a ballpark of $200 per point. . This would be to, say, install a new point in a house already correctly wired. So perhaps would involve running a new line — from how far I don’t know. . We had our entire house rewired top to bottom. It cost $15,000 five years ago for three floors plus a cellar using BX throughout. Our house is 20 x 45 on each floor. We replaced the boxes. There are a standard number of points required by code. It also included a lamp outside and exterior lights and plugs front and back. You could also think of it as about $4,000 per floor. . The electricians can roughly cover up the holes in the plaster. If you want to make it nice and pretty, that’ll be a bit extra from a plaster person. You will need to paint and prime.

As I understand it a point is a ‘convenience outlet’ or what we call a plug outlet. If the wiring’s o.k., you can probably change the points yourself. If not, a neighbor of mine was told to expect to pay between $75 & $125\. depending on the contractor.

Be wary. For new work, after getting three estimates for installing 2 switches and 2 points, I got estimates between 700 and 1100\. I hired a guy who charges $100/hr for the first hr then $75 & came in cheaper (6 hours). Of course, in your case it may just be one place to fix. I do some work myself, and the only hard thing about it is fishing wires through walls, but electric is always more expensive than you’d think.
