Does anybody understand about fabrication and installation times?

Back in April someone in Gowanus complained about somone at Bracci as being rude. The facts were this Gowanus person called for an estimate just a few days before she wanted the ironworks fabricated and installed. Custom fabrication of ironworks will vary from company to company. As for Bracci, they have been in business since 1954 so they must be doing something right. When somone calls in for an estimate a lead sheet is generated and the customer is called within 24 hrs so that an appointment can be set up. An estimator comes out and sketches, measures and photographs the particular area of the property. Then the customer is shown a style book if they want to see styles or they may have their own style that they want. They either get an estimate on site or it is mailed or emailed within a couple of days. Since the company fabricates for commercial and residential properties they have their own methodology of fabricating.  To fabricate and install gates/railings usually takes 2 1/2 weeks and up depending on the time of the year. Bracci is an upfront company. If you want something fabricated and installed in a matter of days they will not lie to you just to take a deposit. They will give you a fairly accurate quote of the time involved to fabricate and install. What’s the point of wasting each others time?  Bracci has a legitimate ironworks business and not only have they fabricated and installed work for thousands of residential customers but they also have done work for many high profile companies and individuals. They have a pretty good idea what to quote based on the work that is running through the shop. What the lady in question really needed was what is referred to as a “junkyard dog.”  Someone who works out of his garage and a van and comes and fabricates on site. You get something quick but the work is horrible. If you call a few months later and complain about the work the phone is disconnected.  Sending out estimators into the field costs money which companies that give free estimates bare. To complain about someone who was upfront but didn’t tell you what you want to hear is rather unfair and comes from someone who has no concept of home improvement. Expecting someone to do custom work in a couple of days is no different than telling a kitchen remodeler that you want a new kitchen in a couple of days. It’s the same thing. If the customer in question would have called in to a company for an estimate knowing that they wanted something in a few days they should have said so over the phone. So if anyone in the brownstoner community is calling someone for home improvement they should state all the particulars and ramifications up front. Thank you and God bless Brooklyn.
