Great mortgage broker

I have just signed the papers for a refinance that I have tried and failed three times since 2009 to get done (through Chase – don’t ever try to refinance with them!).  This time I worked with mortgage broker Vanessa Thatcher who I found on Brownstoner. I was skeptical in spite/because of the wildly enthusiastic plugs – but she was great. Got me an amazing rate and was incredibly responsive and super fast.  I made my first contact with her on Dec. 8 and so the whole thing took just a little over 5 weeks.  The lawyer from Citibank who was just here told me that she is the only mortgage broker he recommends to his family members. I would like to give Vanessa an endorsement as well. I tried to get my coop refinanced by myself and it had to be hands down one of the most infuriating ordeals of my adult life. Vanessa got it done in 3 weeks and got me a great rate.

Are all of you successful refinancers with standalone houses? Anyone had any success with refinancing co-ops, in particular very small (4-unit) co-ops? I’ve been told recently that it’s nearly impossible these days, but been trying to periodically take the pulse and see if things have changed/improved… (P.S. Agree that Wells Fargo is a disaster to work with directly. I’ve described my painful attempt to refinance with them in the forums here before. Disastrous.)

Agree with Landlord. I called my bank (Wells Fargo) the other day looking for info to purchase an investment property. He told me to go into a local branch because they would know more about my area. That’s customer service for ya!

yes my rate was vanessa is 3.875 (down from 6.625!) – chase offered 4.2 and other mortgage brokers also over 4\.  And I didn’t pay mortgage tax but did pay fee – in the end worth it of course since the deal is done and I will ean back fee in 4 months.

I used Universal Mortgage and was impressed with the personal attention they gave me. I could always get them on the phone. They got me the lowest rate and it was ultimately through chase. When I went to refinance with chase I hated them. The loan was under thirty percent of the appraised value and I quit the process and gave up the fee. I walked into citibank on my lunch hour and made the kid promise to keep it easy and it was. My procastanation got me a rate of 3.25 this week. I was a fan of the broker, but I guess a big bank can be ok too.

Why would anyone need a mortgage broker to refinance in NY?  Given that it makes more sense to refinance with your current bank to avoid paying the mortgage tax?
