Pressure-treated wood retaining wall / fence

Hi B’stoners. I have a 17′ wide by 6′ high concrete and cinder block retaining wall in my backyard that is beyond repair and needs to be replaced. The neighbor’s yard on the other side is about 3.5 to 4ft higher than mine. To remove and replace this wall with a similar materials, I am getting quotes of between $8,000 and $12,000. Demo and removal alone is running about $3,000 – $4,000. As a cheaper alternative, I would like to explore building a 6 foot wall using 1×6 pressure-treated wood or something similar. Anyone have informed thoughts to offer, or recs of contractors who have done this kind of work? Thanks.

from a laymans perspective, that sounds awfully inadequate for a 4 foot high and 17 foot wide retaining wall. There are consequences: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/downloads/pdf/tool_kit_retaining_walls.pdf

Hi Dave thanks for the reply, yes 2×6’s. I talked to the neighbor and we are going to split the cost.

Seen lots of walls built with pressure treated but usually always 4″ x 4″ or larger. Even with pressure treated, 2″ stock (which I assume you meant) won’t last very long. Unfortunately I have no recommendations for contractors. Also, are you sure this is your wall? It sounds like a shared situation but something only a survey will determine.
