Fencing dilemma

Hi everyone, We are trying to figure out what to do with our backyard fencing issue. Our neighbors on either side have erected substantial vinyl fences, neither of which match, but both of which give us the needed privacy. I am trying to think of ways to make the fencing on our side more uniform – I could just erect our own fence, but we would lose much needed space if we do so, and it seems unecessary.  So, I was wondering if there was a way to make our garden look better – one idea was to put up some latices or a trellis fence, but I am not sure how that would look.  Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

An alternative to bamboo fencing (which I like a lot), would be to plant climbing vines. Depending on the height and sun exposure: with sun, Major Wheeler honeysuckle, which has red-orange flowers, in shade, climbing hydrangeas look great (with the caveat that, like ivy, they’ll easily grow 30ft, so a good choice if you have a large fence.) You can complement these perennial vines with annual vines the first year, so you don’t have to wait until the second year to have a good visual screen. I like the cardinal climber and the scarlet emperor beans (in the right conditions, they’ll grow up to 6″ per day.). You can get seeds for these two at Whole Foods, or online at Botanical Interests.

Bamboo or reed fencing does the trick quite nicely without taking up much space.   http://remodelista.com/posts/outdoors-instant-bamboo-fencing
