Do I need a permit to replace an existing fence?

We are on Columbia Heights (Promenade side) and would like to replace the fence in the garden. We aren’t looking to change the size or shape and it only affects our own property. Do we need to get a permit?

If you live in the city, chances are good that you’ll need to purchase a fence permit before constructing a new fence or replacing an old one. Fence permits are purchased through the Planning & Zoning department and can cost $25 and up depending on where you live and the length of the fence. I’ve been there before too. Of course, most people don’t bother buying a fence permit, thinking that no one at the city will know. The problem with this money saving tactic is that if the fence has been constructed incorrectly, you will be required to tear it down and start again, which is something that you wouldn’t want (EVER!) When I had my fence built, I went to myezbz.com. I posted what I needed and then waited for replies from local fencing contractors to offer their reasonable bids. Fairly enough, I got what I wanted and went for it.
