Chain Link Fence & Privacy
Hi, Looking for suggestions on adding privacy to chainlink. Choices include permahedge (looks like Christmas tree branches), bamboo, slats, or pvc/wood. Any feedback, opinions, or photos to share? What are pros and cons of what you chose? This will likely be a do-it-ourselves project. The chainlink is fairly strong and 6′ tall. Thank you.

We used reed fencing, 6′ tall and 15′ long. Fairly innexpesive (at Lowes & Home Depot) and looks good for several years. We’re about to replace our after 4 years, more to do with looks than wear and tear.

The vines and fence sound great. Thanks for the ideas. I’ll visit the nursery frederick-law-homestead mentioned. Can you upload a photo of the fence?

That split bamboo fencing is a great idea. I have a next door neighbor who has abandoned his house except for using the back yard as a garbage dump. He’s unresponsive to requests to clean it up and I’m sick of looking at it. Maybe this will help.

I recently bought two sections of split bamboo fencing, 8 ft high by 13 feet long, and attached it to the rear of my garden (6ft chain link) with plastic zip ties. Took all of 20 minutes. Best $100 I’ve ever spent, and it looks beautiful. Kings County Nurseries on New York Ave carries it.

Most of these plants will cover 25-40ft at maturity. If you’d like fast, evergreen coverage in a sunny area, I recommend Major Wheeler Honeysuckle: loads of trumpet red flowers in the summer, quite thick and insulating, with evergreen bronze foliage. They grow to about 6-8 ft tall, maybe 3ft-wide. The trumpetvine is also a good candidate, as it grows very fast, but the coverage is not as dense. It would be good for visual screening, but won’t provide quite the same privacy. These are both tough plants that need virtually no care after the first year (some watering if we have a drought). How long is your chain-link fence?

Thanks. I love the idea of natural coverage, however I don’t know how to grow anything. My yard is mostly concrete so I’m wondering I I would plant ivy etc so that it covers the entire length of fence? Would it provide coverage in the cold months too?

How about vines? The selection will depend on your sun exposure. With full sun, I am partial to the cardinal climber and/or trumpetvine (red or orange-yellow), which grow super-fast. You could also mix in some wisteria (slower growth, but will take over eventually.) I also like American Bittersweet (you need a male and a female plants to get the fruits.) In semi-shade, you can do ivy (but it’s quite aggressive, so you’ll need to keep it in check), or climbing hydrangea or the spectacular Dutchman’s pipe.
