Scaffolding - what type is required?
The laws were changed in either Dec of 2009 or some time 2010 and became much more strict. Call a reputable scaffolding company and ask them to read you the specs (Rockledge, Everest, Colgate, etc). When we had facade work done, law required us to have a pipe scaffold with a complete sidewalk shed – fitted with lights. Our house is 20 feet wide. We also had to protect/cover the entryway to the house next door. Follow the letter of the law to insure coverage/liability.

We’ve just gotten three quotes for exterior/facade work and each one of them said that a different kind of scaffolding was required. One said since the sidewalk was 15 feet wide or so, we could get away with a drop scaffold and some tarps. The second said we’d need a drop scaffold and a sidewalk shed. The third said we’d need a shed and a pipe scaffold. Each one said they had a city scaffolding license and that they knew what they were talking about. And the last said we could get hit with a major fine if we didn’t put up a shed and pipe scaffolding. What gives?
