Termites: When Should I Exterminate

Have them come now and spray every piece of exposed wood with a very heavy dose of Boracare. You will want to supervise to make sure that they are putting actual boracare into their sprayer (it has to be diluted with water, but unscrupulous and cheap exterminators will spray water and tell you it is boracare). They should spray every side of the exposed wood very thoroughly (the wood should be wet). The Boracare is absorbed by the wood. Once it is treated, it lasts for many, many years provided that the wood does not get wet.

Our house had a minor termite problem over the last few years. We solved the problem (prevented water from coming into the house) and had the exterminator treat the house. It’s all been great, no signs of them. Skip to September 2013, and we’re doing a full gut renovation. We’ve replaced or sistered existed joists, installed new framing and plywood. They’re still exposed. My question to the forum is, does it make better sense to have the exterminator come in now and re-fumigate the house? Or can we wait until the reno is complete?
