National Grid Inspections in Park Slope?

Hello, We got a notice a few weeks ago from National Grid that they are “beginning a program to inspect the natural gas service inside homes and businesses in our area”. The weird thing is that we have two accounts on our house and only got the notice for one of them. And we got it about a week after we had a pretty negative experience with a meter reader. And when I called the customer service line they told me they want to inspect the gas lines throughout the inside of my house and its a mandatory program. Anyone else get this type of a notice? Heard of this “program” in Park Slope? Would you let them come inspect the inside of your house?

When I had difficulty being around for a live reading, the company suggested I install the automatic reader.  Perhaps that is what is going on here?

Curious about the details of your “pretty negative experience with a meter reader.” Especially since National Grid went to Automated Meter Reading in Park Slope years ago, and live NG meter readers are scarcer than hen’s teeth. Have you recently begun using a gas line or appliance that was previously disconnected? More likely that one of your meters is old enough to need replacing, or needs an AMR retrofit.

Agree with Dave. I would not let them in. Only time it is mandatory is if you have a possible gas leak, if they think you are stealing gas or if they think you have tampered with a meter.

I’d be very leery of this.  No good can come of it.  They could tell you that all of your lines need to be replaced “just because.”
