So I bought my house a year and half ago, and last summer poured a concrete slab in the basement. There was a dirt floor before and there were gigantic waterbugs down there having an all out party. It has now been curbed to a small swaray but they are still down there and occasionally appear in other areas of the house where they come to die (are they trying to make me feel bad? It’s not working). I have had exterminators put that sawdust looking powder down and that seems to be doing something, but after all this time I would think I should be seeing less of them…or preferably NONE! There are some cracks between the basement slab and rubble foundation that I think sealing would help, but I know these damn things can get in anywhere so I want to do what I can to also kill whatever is down there. Does anyone have any suggestions or a good exterminator who they’ve used for this problem? HELP!!

I can’t help with the basement, could be coming in with pipes, electrical etc. I have also seen them come in through open top floor windows, the flying ones are especially fun.

Check the pipes that go to the sewer. We had a small hole (probably the size of a dime) develop in the back of a cast iron pipe that was letting in lots of waterbugs. You couldn’t see the hole — only feel it with your hand. Once we plugged it, we eliminated 99% of the bugs.

Man, do I hate those things. Check the joists in your basement ceiling, near the foundation (assuming your ceiling is unfinished). After a couple years of trying to seal every crack I saw and not really reducing the influx, I found a large gap on the edge of one joist into the wall – and I swear eyes looked back at me when I looked in it! I sealed that up and the yearly migration has been significantly reduced… Good luck!

I found them living in the wet wall behind the bathroom. Bathtub vent pipe on the first floor was rotted which gave them easy access to the waste vent. Also toilet bend on top floor had a hole in it which made the wet wall damp and very hospitable. I fixed those problems, set off a bug bomb in the wet wall and I haven’t seen a water bug in a few years now.
