Would you preemptively replace a sewer line? Q on maintenance and timing
Hi all,
We have been in our house for 7 years and have known since early on that the main sewer line was infiltrated by the roots of the large city tree directly out front. Since moving in, we have had someone clear the line every year or two; most recently he showed me about a handful-size tangle of roots he’d removed. We are expecting that in the next couple of years we will need to do some facade work and replace the concrete out front, which is degraded. If we know the main is compromised (and I think it’s original), does it make sense to replace it before doing all this other work, even though it’s intact now? Or should we continue clearing the line and putting off the exterior work right up until the whole thing collapses? Can anyone recommend a sewer line company, for both cleaning out the roots and replacement?

I forgot to add that I too had the insurance and was denied my claim because my pipe had a “belly”. After additional research I have become aware that they can claim this on any pipe and there is no real way to prove it or not. I also have a friend who works for the company who does the street work and he tells me that its all about the numbers. If they are having a very busy month and too many claims (ie. spending too much money) they will say the pipe has a belly or its an issue that was there before the insurance was purchased. Its all a game!!!

I had a similar situation but wasn’t smart enough to think about it ahead of time like you lol. I was aware of my problem and continued to push it off until I lost all functionality of the sewer/water in my house. I had to have an emergency sewer replacement done over a weekend. I too use Harris Water who was quick and reasonably priced.
Based on your factors, I would say change it now and dont wait for it to be too late

I have been through it all with a few homes I own in Brooklyn. To make a long story short, I have been denied multiple claims for different locations from the insurance company with no good reason. At this point I cannot speak too much about it but know they will not continue to operate as is.
For your direct feedback, yes now is the time to replace the sewer. You certainly do not want to wait until after and if you know you are going to replace it, why wait? The cost is only going up and you can reduce the risk of any potential clogs by replacing it now.
As for my referral, I have been using Harris Water for many of my homes since the early 70’s. They have been around since the early 1900’s and seem to be the most professional and popular company.

Speaking from experience, I agree with the sentiment here.
Insurance is a waste: they found reasons not to cover our issue over the phone and would not escalate or send someone out while i had sewage backed up and overflowing.
Replacing the line is expensive and if you can fit it into the budget while redoing sidewalk, go for it and you can probably knock a little off the price since you’ll be repairing the sidewalk yourself (not the sewer line contractor).
Lastly, I used Alex Figliolia (foreman: Andrew Kryzak) about this time last year and was happy with the experience despite the somewhat unexpected expense and the company’s checkered past.

I thought the forum consensus on that sewer line insurance was not to get it because they typically try to get out of covering anything. Am I wrong?

National grid is installing gas valves in the sidewalk in front of every house – at least in my area (Windsor Terrace) – maybe that’s what you’re thinking of? I’m assuming it’s part of the reaction to too many buildings blowing up lately. They’re covering it all – no charge to homeowners.

Examine your last water/sewer bill. There is an option to buy insurance covering your water line and/ or sewer line against failure. I would check into this and read through the fine print and call the company for details. You have to have the policy in effect for a short amount of time before you can make a claim. Definitely worth investigating. It is a legitimate program that might save you a small fortune

Wait for the line to collapse. Do you have the insurance from NYC EPA? Sidewalk: Wait for the DOT violation. Cost you about $2K. NatGrid and NYC EPA are ripping out old pipes. Do you have tree? Has anyone tripped? Facade people are not sidewalk people. Facade is a big ticket item so budget ahead.

If you are re-doing complete cement job in front water and sewer will never be easier from an aesthetic perspective. Our cement was basically brand new when we moved in and opted not to rip it all up. Did the water line, the patch job is horrendous. Economically speaking obviously a difficult one to justify, depends how you value peace of mind and how well you can afford.
