NYC Regulations on Sidewalk Tree Boxes?

We have a tree on the sidewalk in front of the building by the curb and would like to install something permanent to keep dogs at a distance. Are there any rules about how high of a mini-wall one can build around the tree? One could argue it’s a trip hazard or a hazard for a car door since it’s at the curb and we don’t want to be hit with a DOB violation. Thanks for any help.

I will second just donating to the Tree Trust and getting them to install your chosen design. They handle the permit needed too. They installed it in an hour, looks great!

NYC Parks Dept has a website on tree guards. https://www.nycgovparks.org/trees/tree-care/tree-guards

Easiest option if you want one installed legally is to “donate” to the NY Tree Trust and they will come install one for you, and you pick the design.

Yes, there are rules. Street trees are governed by the parks dept and a parks dept permit is needed to “legally” install a tree guard. They have pre approved designers or you can submit a design for approval, but it cannot be made of wood, and must be metal for some reason which makes it less diy friendly. Or you can just do it and take you chances which many people do. The biggest risk would be if someone gets hurt on it or damages their car on an unapproved tree guard that can be linked to you. Good luck.
