Insulation over brick wall

Has anyone installed insulation over a brick exterior wall (back wall, in this case)? The wall needs work, and this would be an opportunity to make the house more energy efficient and comfortable. We can get drawings. What material and/or system did you use, who did the work, how did it turn out?

Agree with cate. If you do decide to do it you need a rain screen. Better to do it from the inside. And don’t use foam.

Insulation over a brick wall sounds like a recipe for disaster. Just repoint the wall. Use an experienced and reputable mason. Or, if you are getting water in the house, make sure your gutters are working properly, cleared and not bending in storms, and not allowing water to stream down the facade of the house. Be advised you could also have issues if your neighbors’ roofs and gutters are not working properly. Nobody should have tree branches touching their house. Also, if you are having air intrusion issues into your house, caulking any wood around windows can make a big difference. (And actually insulating in the area all around the window can also help, if it’s feasible.)

are you talking about one of those fake stucco styrofoam systems? i do a lot of work in brooklyn and do not see these on too many houses down there. i do see them over here in queens where i live. i have heard complaints about them over the years (water intrusion) and there was a massive lawsuit with these in Wilmington NC when they first came out in the early 1990’s. Not sure how those issues were resolved (some failed and manufacturers blamed installers). someone recently made a comment about these systems and i cannot recall if i read it here or heard it someplace else. but i seem to recall it was not a positive comment.

Perhaps clarify if this is what you are asking about and maybe someone can offer some help.
