Flat or Semi Gloss or Gloss for a metal cornice>

Hi everyone, what kind of paint to use on a metal cornice 20 feet long. Painter put “flat” on their proposal but I can’t imagine flat paint on an exterior cornice. Do you have recommendation for the finish type and kind of paint he should be using. Just checking. Did you have yours painted and how is it wearing? Is it peeling, flaking? Other problems? Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, Thank you for the help.’ The work is done and this is an update and a few more thoughts. We found that some colors are not available in every finish option. Custom colors in particular, might not come in high gloss (if you want that). If you want to match your cornice and front door just check to be sure you can match the finishes and color in your brand.
Our cornice is metal. The painters power washed it before painting and quite a lot of old paint flakes off.! This revealed more detail. We decided to go with a semi gloss finish because it would make the detail stand out more than a flat. We used a sort of stone color like the hood over the front door. (I don’t know the architectural name for it). It looks very good and will be more functional in protecting the front of the house from water.

RE: “how is it wearing? Is it peeling, flaking? Other problems? ” any paint will eventually need re-doing. We’ve had our cornice repainted 3 or 4 or times [over the 40+ years that “no-permitz” loves me to write about] I think that flat paint would have not lasted as long and the one time we used a brand other than Rustoleum we were disappointed with it’s lack of durability.

Also I’ll add that mine was painted black and do find that matte was better for other colors. The evening light on black gloss is very charming.

I had my wooden cornice repainted last month in gloss oil paint. My painter was also pushing for flat and said it’s more in vogue now. To help make the decision I wandered around brownstone Brooklyn trying to find a trend and basically – there isn’t one. I’ve seen glossy and flat that I have liked. There is no rhyme or reason – adjacent buildings will have one and then the other. I would have preferred semi-gloss but painter was being a pain about finding it in the local paint stores. In the end, happy with the gloss and feel like it should hold up. I paid $1800 for a two-day job of scraping, priming, and painting.

hate hate hate gloss. sry, tacky to me – matte is the ticket for me, or eggshell (most sheen i can handle on cornices). gloss reminds me of people that like stainless steel fences

I suggest looking into linseed oil paints, such as Allback, if you don’t want to have to repaint in a couple years.

Oh, when I had my cornice repainted recently the painter talked me into semi-gloss but could only find Rustoleum “Leather Brown”, the color we’ve used since 1974, in glossy. That was fine with me.

I use semi and after a few weeks, it looks satin. Flat always looks dulled, old and does not hold up l, or protect as well.

For a metal cornice I would use a flat oil based paint.
A gloss is going to show all the faults, lumps & bumps etc. And as it ages, it will show even more .
Also cornices where originally intended to look as if they were carved stone to match the rest of the facade, not some bright bling on the top of your house.
