I did an ipe fence on top of a retaining wall – i didn’t want to use pressure treated and wanted all ipe. long story short is that five 4×4 (15′ each) came to $1100 @ dykes. I’ll admit i had some buyers remorse after spending $$ for posts i will never see. It takes a while to install as each screw needs to be pre-drilled. Boards are quite difficult to bend as far as imperfections go, so if you’re going high end it helps to get someone experienced given the investment. If i were doing it under a budget i would almost certainly do PT – unless you like doing annual oiling they all go gray in the end. I would just plane new edges on the PT first and sand fence after.

Please note: if you put up the now ubiquitous horizontal slat fence, you limit the sunlight at the perimeters of your yard, not to mention that of your neighbor. If you are a gardener, consider well the direction of your sunlight.

Thanks for all the great info! Great post as I’m thinking of fence options. I love the horizontal fence look but in real life, I was surprised how “thick” they are. The ones I’ve seen use 4×4 posts (I believe) with the deck boards nailed on the inside. Looks great on the inside but from the other side (maybe it doesn’t matter) and my eye can’t get over how thick it looks coming down the short landing most backyards have.
Anyone use Slipfence? Seems like a good alternative and I like the black metal.
Easy install and it solves my problem with the fence thickness. Anyone have an opinion in what Cedar #3 looks like finished? Acceptable for fencing?

I just got a new cedar fence installed by Fence R Us. It is approx. 75 liner feet and it cost $3,000. After gathering quotes from four companies (and talking to SoSlope who had used the one I was most interested in) I went with Fences R Us. Not the most ‘polished’ company but the cheapest, and they could do the work pretty much immediately. The fence is fine – it does the job. I’m happy to talk to anyone interested in discussing further and/or come take a look. Just contact me via this site.

See attached pics for some inspiration on cost effective solutions.
The long (40’ maybe?) side fence I built out of PT posts and PT boards from HD or Lowes. Materials were over $500, under $1000, I forget exactly. I don’t treat the wood and this is holding up fine after three years. TBH, I don’t love the horizontal boards on top as they are obviously subject to all the weather throws at them, so they may need to be changed at some point between five and ten years?
The other horizontals slating you see is recycled pallets screwed to PT 2×4 bracing. A mixture of hardwoods and softwoods. Obviously if you have time you ca be picky and use more hardwood. These were all nice different shades on installation, but within six months had weathered to the same appearance. This will be good when pieces need to be replaced a la carte. Cost was neglible in terms of material (pallets were free), but it takes a lot of time to disassemble pallets, even if you’re leaving cut nail ends in them. You also have to plan the spacing to be able to accommodate shortish spans, since most palle ts are of a finite length. I didn’t treat the wood at all, and the oldest parts are going strong three years now.

What is the relative durability and price as between Ipe and the high-end PVC/imitation wood? The imitation wood looks ok, but still not nearly as good as real wood, but I’m still scared but the relative lack of durability of wood.

Cost us $4,800 for ~65 linear feet total, I believe. This was the high quality PVC/imitation wood. The quote for cedar was a lot less.

Another data point fwiw: currently redoing my fence with Adam Seim from Urban Exteriors.
We have 2 lengths of 60ft each (we have a pretty long lot/yard).
We worked on a design that i am hoping will be extremely durable (30+ years) and very simple.
I would have loved Ipe, but just the wood was close to $4K per side for these length. Opted for Cumaru instead, which is a tad lighter and also has quite a few more shades than Ipe (which i like). It’s a fraction of the price at $1.35 per linear ft from Advantage lumber for 5/4 x 4 boards, so cut costs of wood in half ($4k) and Cumaru is rated as strong as Ipe.
For the posts, opted for 4×4 steel posts (again with the idea to make the fences nearly indestructible and not touch this again for 30 years). That’s just under $3k.
Last big ticket item: Concrete for the posts. $500, give or take.
Hope this helps.

In case anyone is interested, I went to Dykes yesterday to quote costs on wood (prices all by the linear foot):
1×4 ipe: $2.50
1×6 ipe: $4.25
1×4 clear cedar: $2.48
1×6 clear cedar: $4.68
1×4 #3 cedar: $.96
1×6 #3 cedar: $1.53
So for instance, in our case, we need to build about 51 feet of fence. If we go with 1×4 with a 1/2″ gap between boards and 6′ tall total, that’s ~1150 board feet. The material costs (just for the facing boards – not including posts, hardware, etc) would be ~$1100 for #3 cedar or ~$2900 for ipe or clear cedar.
We’ve decided that we can’t stomach the environmental footprint of ipe (but it is really pretty). Also, the clear cedar only comes random length (at least at Dykes), while the #3 cedar comes in standard board lengths, so there’s a big practicality/waste factor there.
I still wouldn’t mind checking out a composite option – if we could find something that was 100% recycled material, say, that would be pretty cool – but I don’t know where to look.

Can anyone post how much their fence cost? We are landscaping our backyard this summer and I want to have a fence installed (I would like composite, husband wants oak) and we’re trying to figure out what a sane cost is to have someone build it. It’s about 70 linear feet total for two sides, no street access. I know the answer is “well it depends on what material you choose!” but we’re just looking for rough, sanity-checking estimates.

@Ashton13–We used Fence R Us. Here is my post from last fall: https://www.brownstoner.com/forum/#!/general-discussion:backyard-fence-installer
Contrary to the Yelp reviews, we had a very positive experience (he had an explanation for the Yelp reviews for someone who called him, but I cannot speak to that). I don’t think they do horizontal–it would probably take some work to adapt the system to work horizontally. The actual material is very light weight, so I would be surprised if it sagged, but don’t really know. We have had the fence (vertical, not horizontal) for a year and it looks as good as the day it was installed.
P.S. The smiley face emoji in my last post was supposed to be an “8”. The Home Depot fence was badly rotted after 8 years.

Soslope – do you have a local source for that material? I’ve never worked with that type of stuff and would really like to check it out in person. Also – I don’t seem to see any pics of horizontal slat fence builds on their site – I wonder how it would hold up? Wondering if it would sag from summer heat.

We replaced our badly decayed ceder fence last spring with a pvc product that is an incredibly convincing imitation of light cedar even when you are only a foot or so away. The cedar fence we had was from Home Depot and only lasted 10 years (and was badly rotted after about 8). So far, we are really happy with the fence. The fence is identical on both sides, so nice for neighbors.
This is the product we used: https://illusionsfence.com/2017/09/incredible-pvc-vinyl-wood-grain-fence-images/
Note: the Eastern White Cedar (picture 2 in the link) is the most convincing.
Also, the high quality pvc was materially more expensive than wood, but it won’t rot and should last a long time.

I’ll try to find it, Cate. It was standard board-on-board in 6′ lengths & it wasn’t treated since I was concerned about leaching into the pool. I did let it sit for 6 months & then treated it myself w/ Thompson’s – suggested by the installer.

Arkady, do you recall what kind of wood your fence is made of and whether it’s treated?
