Looking for a possible buried oil tank
hi all, I am interested in a buying a house and upon inspection it was determined that there was a possibility of a buried oil tank. The owner has no knowledge of this but has agreed to allow testing to determine whether any large metal structures are buried in the lawn. Has anyone had experience with this? Any recommendations of companies that would do this type of testing? thanks

We withdrew an accepted offer over this last year. I remember thinking that it *probably* wasn’t a problem–but if it was there, and was leaking, it could be a big deal. I was heartbroken, but the sellers wouldn’t let us check for it and I didn’t trust them enough to take their word that nothing was there. Anyway, I think I remember that there was a very well respected place in NJ–I got the name from the old archives. They told me that they would do some scans and poke around in the dirt to see if it were there. The real issue is that if you find something there, then you have to determine whether you can decommission it in place or haul it all out. And as always it is more complicated in the city and around springs etc. Good luck.

Go to the local building department. Review the entire file. Look at the survey. Contact the utility. Hire a licensed survey or a company that does soils testing. The best one in Soil Mechanics in Nassau County. Ed Kopel Architects

Timber: I think if they buy this property, they would want to be sure there is no tank present as it can become a problem, especially if there is anything left in it. Sandborn maps? I used them to verify that my great grandfather had sold gasoline from his store on LI in the late 1910’s; they did show an underground tank. Steve Steve
