DEP water and sewer line protection

I was considering this program so I read the terms. One exclusion was that a sewer line repair would not be covered if the line was connected to a storm or basement drain system. I called the company -AWR – and asked if this exclusion applied to roof drainage. I was told that because my roof drained into the sewer line that I was not eligible for sewer line coverage. Has anyone had a similar experience? P.S. I was able to get coverage for the water line only.

This really makes no sense.  Not only do most builidngs have roof drains tied in to the main sewer line, but this has been required by law.  New construction does require separate lines, but the code most of us are operating under requires that our gutters run in to the waste line to the sewer so these setups cannot be considered “non-conforming.”

You will see that I I have posted previously on this topic, and maintain my original POV:  insurance like this is for suckers.  I don’t buy the policy for my iPhone, either.  Once you read all the fine print, you find that in the unlikely event you ever need the policy, it conveniently doens’t cover you anyhow.

Kudos to danw for posting this. I’ve posted a link to this thresd on our local PLG listserve. Until I read this thread I had thought that this plan was a good deal; now I’m glad I didn’t opt for it. Because of the high cost of replacement sewer line coverage is far more imourtant than coverage for water mains.

Could any of these people commenting here by contractors who are not on AWR’s approved  contractor list?

This is f-cked up.  I got one of these notices ago from the New York Department of Environmental Protection and have been on the fence since then.   It’s worth that the DEP goes out of its way to shill for AWR (“we are pleased to offer these programs to our homeowners and provide peace of mind prtoection from unexpected repair costs”) while also going of its way to bully and scare homeowners to sign onto this scam (“New York City homeowners are not aware that repairs to the water and sewer lines that run from their home’s exterior to the mains in the street are their responsibility….many residents are unprepared for the potentially high cost of repairs”).     This is a from a letter signed by the NYC DEP deputy commissioner on official letterhead.   Consumer fraud from our own government.  Very fcked up.

I knew from the moment I read all the terms and conditions that the bets are stacked against the homeowner.  I couldn’t find alot of information/reviews online but what I did find was enough of a red flag (28 complaints with the BBB)  to make me realize that this was too good to be true.  I particularly did not like the fact that AWR doesn’t allow the homeowner a say in who does the repairs.  And frankly, most of us don’t know enough about main/sewer lines to be able to argue when the inevitable denial of coverage occurs under AWR’s myriad of complex terms of insurability kick in.  I also find it questionable that the DEP is endorsing AWR given their onerous terms and conditions.   I found this consumer complaint which others might like to read:   http://www.ripoffreport.com/home-warrantee-companies/american-water-resco/american-water-rescources-insu-e6dyy.htm

SCAM SCAM SCAM- daveinbedstuy, you can’t imagine how spot on you were on this. I just got off the phone with AWR and canceled both coverages b/c when pressed about the roof issue as in OP’s post, they relented and said the sewer line would NOT be covered. This is in direct conflict with what I was told by another rep prior to signing up for the coverage. It’s the sewer line that is the culprit in most instances necessitating repair, not the water line. Unbelievably the rep had the audacity to say that in the event I needed a repair on the sewer line, they would have refunded my money. I told her that many -if not most- of older Brooklyn homes had this system and they should be contacting each and every one to more clearly inform them. Fat chance. STAY AWAY!  Thank you, danw!

I also called with that exact question and got a different answer. I was told that the branches coming into the main line (such as basement/roof connections) are not covered but the main line is covered. This answer would make more sense since many Brooklyn homes have this system and the answer you were given would effectively exclude them.
