structural repairs to brownstone steps

Hello I am not familiar with the internal construction of brownstone stoop / steps, other than what can be clearly observed from the outside or inside (masonry / brick structure underneath). While I have no particular reason to suspect an immediate problem, the steps are extremely heavy and I am considering reinforcing the support structure of the stoop from the inside using a combination of masonry block and perhaps steel or fiberglass structural elements. None of this would be visible from the outside. I have several questions regarding this. One is if there are any specific recommendations for making these kind of repairs? Has anyone done this kind of reinforcement? Does anyone know how the stoops are built internally? The building is in a historic district in Brooklyn. Is the Landmarks Commission concerned about making this type of repairs where they will not be visible?

Please contact Anthony the Mason, 347 307 4725\. He is approved by the Landmark Association of NYC for brownstone repairs. He did an amazing restoration with our brownstone. We had stoop, façade, and sidewalk restored. We found him on this forum. He is very creative and extremely knowledgeable. Good Luck!

I saw a neighbor’s stoop being redone & there are huge blocks of granite under them. I’d get a contractor who knows what he’s doing to do the work. I doubt that there’s any landmark ‘issue’ w/ what you propose.
