Stoop Stairs (siding house, not brownstone)
Hi, I have a house with siding on it and what seem to me to be concrete steps leading up to the parlor floor entrance. The steps are falling apart from salt and shoveling over the winter and need to be replaced. Does anyone know what material should be used in the steps so that they last? The concrete that was used on my existing steps clearly is not the right material as it crumbles when you kick it. The bricks underneath seem to be intact, but the cracking concrete leads to leaking under the stairs in that little room. Also, I have heard that it may be best to replace the steps with slate but I am concerned that it would be too slippery. Any thoughts on slate? Any sense of pricing for this job? I have 13 steps. Thanks in advance for your help. I am clueless and appreciate any feedback you can offer.

If you are in a landmark district, Landmarks will dictate. If not, I am sure that people did not mean Slate; slate chips and flakes too easily to be used for steps, they probably meant Granite. Or there are many other cast stone alternatives. A good place to go for inspiration is Glenwood Masonry, on Glenwood Rd (Google them) They have what seems like several blocks (street blocks) of laid out paving, stone, slabs of all kinds displayed.
