A neighbor across the street from me spent a fortune last summer to put a radiant system under his front pathway…. it does not work! Of all the winters to be its first year of operation. Of course there are still plenty of kids here in Crown Heights willing to shovel for him. 🙂

Steve, I don’t know the particulars on how/why rent is paid to the city for what it takes to heat a sidewalk, but I do know people who have done it on the sneak and don’t pay for it. The legit thing to do, though, is to file and pay. Indeed, the City has figured out a way to win every bet.

I was just given an electric snow blower 3 weeks ago. I swore I wouldn’t use it but, in fact, have done so 3 times. It’s quite wonderful. You have to push it so it’s still a workout but is so much faster & easier on wet, heavy falls.

Master Plumber: I actually trust what you are saying in that someone must pay rent to the city for the use of the space the heating tubes take up in the sidewalk, but somehow I am again baffled about how the city manages to pull that off. Who owns the sidewalk and if the city does, why do I pay to replace it? why do I get a ticket if I leave snow on it? Better yet, if I own the sidewalk, why should I pay rent to the city for the tubes – or does the city have a right-of-way over the sidewalk which precludes us from using it for any other purpose than to walk on, maintain the surface of, shovel, and pay tickets on? I do believe what you are saying, I just love the way the city writes codes and laws so they always come out on top. Enough of this and people begin to use their crooked double standards as an excuse to screw them where they can. Heating the sidewalk may be a black environmental issue until one considers the effects of the ice melting chemicals, eh? I hope you read this and respond as I always look forward to your comments. I’ve installed several snowing melting systems in NYC and I can tell you that to do it right takes a lot of energy and upfront costs and to do it legally means you pay monthly “rent” to the city for the sidewalk space the tubing, or electrical mat, takes up. Snowmelting, like pool heating, is an environmentally black practice. So do it if you want and have the money but understand that it is a real indulgence. Also understand that there are many conditions that are impractical to design for. Strong winds and excessive low temps can make the whole system not work. Also, what to do with the water left by the melting snow often becomes an issue. Most snowmelt systems are installed in commercial applications for reasons of safety and limiting liability. Resulting ice can negate those benefits. Think about that right there.

Wow. You all either make me shake my head and laugh or shake my head and cry… Especially Dibs. You’re still stuck on the warming part as if what we feel here in Brooklyn is “THE weather”. Dibs it’s the entire climate that is changing, warming and cooling. Not just “global warming” as you see it but a warming trend over time that involves various temperature shifts in different global areas. But I digress… OP your sidewalk heating system would run on hot water not on electricity. The elctrical cost involved is from running the small pump needed to circulate the water throught the radiant loop and the electricity used by the boiler controls which is miniscule. As someone pointed out, there are very few snow days. I don’t think the electrical draw is a significant factor in whether or not to install this. More likely it is an upfront cost issue. Figure the cost for installing the radiant loop, as well as cost for demolition and replacement of the sidewalk. If youhave $10k-$15k to spend, then I would do it. After this winter I am seriously contemplating this for the family homestead in Bay Ridge. Having shoveled the driveway for the past 30 years, I’m kind of tired of it.

Agreed, would have to do a little home work on the energy usage, of course it wouldn’t be cheap. It wouldn’t be the whole season either, just the 12 or so snowy days. I wouldn’t do the entire sidewalk anyway, just the blocks closer to the fence. A2chitect has a good point, in my case I had new electrical feeds installed 3 years ago and an old growth tree out front…I’m sure there are some unknown complications

As nice of an idea as this sounds, I would not do it. All sidewalks are property of the NYC DOT and they have the right to tear up the sidewalk on your property if necessary (i.e. utility work, tree planting, etc). You would need to get their permission to install the system, and there would be no guarantee that it wouldn’t get destroyed in the future.

Hi yes, I just priced one last week for a sidewalk in the village. We do bluestone sidewalks and the radiant heat system seems to work better for concrete sidewalk applications. The pricing I got for materials was in the range of $5000- $7000.00 for a 200 sq ft area. An electrician would be necessary for the installation so there is an additional cost there too.
