driveway blocking

Hi All,

I just bought a house in Brooklyn and am facing a weekly problem with cars partially blocking my driveway. I can drive around them to get in but when my neighbors car is parked in their driveway as well (the driveways are next to each other), it becomes a real pain in the rear.

So, my question is how much does a car have to be over the driveway border to be ticketed for blocking a driveway?

We have multiple copies of a note that we put on the windshield of people who do this.  It’s actually pretty friendly, and just decribes that we know that they probably don’t realize it, but blocking the driveway “just a little bit’ impedes your ability to exit. In the case of how much is too much, you have to wait until it is ligitimately too much (ie, not just a pain but that you cannot get your car out).  You then call your precinct, which will send an officer to ticket the car. Once the car is ticketed, you can call a tow company, who will move and hold the car at the car owner’s expense. Try the note in the meantime, though.  It’s worked so well, we hardly ever need them anymore.

Express your concerns to the neighbor’s and see if they are willing to take into consideration what’s going on and not block your driveway. If you see no progress then contact your local precinct. At least you tried to be polite.
