Back yard drainage and dry well installation
Sometimes our back yard drain gets clogged with leaves, and the back yard pools with water. Occasionally, we have had water in our basement or the back garden floor room if we are not vigilant in keeping the drain free and clear of leaves. Obviously, if we’re not home at the time it rains, this can be a problem. I’m looking for a not so complicated way to improve the drainage, and I have been told that a dry well would work well. Does anyone have someone – a licensed professional engineer and/or contractor – they can recommend who can do this work? Also, if you have any recommendations about other ways to manage back yard draining, I’d appreciate that also. Thanks very much.

After our grass “lawn” failed in our shady backyard (an area about 10 ft by 15 ft) we put down gravel over a 4 inch bed of sand. We like the look very much and, as importantly, it acts as a giant dry well when rains are heavy.

French drain or “soak-away” solved that problem for me. I think that’s the same as a dry well. I didn’t use an engineer, just placed it away from the house & slanted the patio away from the foundation too.

The most ideal approach to prevent water from amassing in your back-yard drainage is to guide it far from your home of evaluating and drainage.

I did not resolve it yet. We’ve done some work on one of our rear extensions (we have two), and are planning on re-doing the second one next year, which will involve waterproofing and some excavation to waterproof the wall below grade so I am hoping to tackle it then. It has not been a problem recently (even today in the rain, we were o.k.), I just can’t have a clogged drain or it backs up and comes into the house.

I am having the same issue. Cobble-hill-girl, did you find a solution?
