Stripping Double Entry Doors

i know this has been asked a million times already, but the forum “search” ain’t what it used to be! I’m looking to have my double entry doors stripped of their paint.
anyone have any advice for someone to come and remove them, strip them, and reinstall?
Would they (re)install knobs/hardware etc? does everyone just leave this open (our second door locks) or put in a temporary door? thanks all!

I think most people have them done in place – you see it being done all around the neighborhoods all the time.  That’s how we had ours done.  So long ago I don’t remember by whom.  Make sure you pick carefully based on other jobs that are done by them that you see.  Ours were done a more orangey color stain that I specified, but that was what the person did everywhere, apparently, regardless of what you asked for.  Looked fine, really, in the end.  Also make sure they protect properly any surrounding stuff – ours messed up the marble in our entryway when they came to spraying on whatever finish was sprayed…should have protected all adjacent surfaces, or not sprayed.

We had our doors stripped and restored by Brooklyn Artisan last year. They were not cheap but the work was great and they did the work on site with no mess. Some of the wood underneath the paint was damaged, but they fixed it up and stained and sealed the door. Impressive final product. You can reach them at 917.509.5852. D

Dean from Park Slope Paint Strippers will pick up doors, strip them and then drop them off (he does a great job!) but I’m pretty sure you’ll have have to take them down & put them back up yourself.  His #: 631-672-3615

I think Steve from Tinker’s Wagon does this work, 347-813-9635\. Also I saw someone stripping doors early today (before your post) on 7th St. between 7th & 8th Aves. I didn’t have time to talk with him though, so no idea if he was homeowner or for hire.

My door were done so long ago that I don’t have anyone to recommend,  I would suggest that you re-think removing them for stripping.  Mine were stripped in place, including the frame.  I had previously removed and stripped the doorknobs and keyhole covers.   My doors are similiar to yours but with more doo-dads, solid wood where you have glass and quarter round windows at the very top.  It turned out that my wood was so damaged that I would not have gotten a good look with staining/poly so I painted them BM Essex Green – very dark and I’m on the shady side of the street so really dark and I like it.  It was totally worth it to strip the doors as I got a great paint job which has held up well.  It was expensive but it was done about 20 years ago and maybe in a couple of years I’ll paint again.  I do maintain it by cleaning it (Murphy’s Oil Soap and water) and dry it every few months.  I did some touch up on the edges after a big construction project a few years ago but that’s it.  It helps that the doors are to my apartment only and I’m not rough on them.
