Security door plus insect screen - it can't be that hard, can it?
Brownstoners, I would love your help. I would like to replace an existing screen door with a security door that also has an insect screen. It’s in a room whose sole light and air source is that door, so I would like to be able to keep the main glass door open in the summer without worrying about backyard break-ins. However, I’m having a lot of trouble finding plain vanilla security doors that also have an option to include insect screens. A lot of the security doors I’m seeing online also have that horrible metal netting for extra security which I think is probably overkill for the use I’m envisioning. Does anyone have any suggestions about where I can go to get something like this? Does it have to be custom? Or is it relatively straightforward to rig a mosquito net/screen onto a metal security door that doesn’t otherwise have that option built in? Thanks!

This was hard to find, surprising right? We ended up with a compromise – a stronger-than-usual screen door with an interchangeable window/screen made by Gorell. They’ve gone out of business, but Harvey makes nice doors too. Hope you found something!

You can order one at Home Depot. Includes glass panes (plastic actually I think), and screens. You can specify one that is as simple or ornate as you want. Inexpensive and works.

Thanks so much, everyone! I’ll look up Grisham and talk to Mike at Brooklyn window and door. I’ll also talk to a few iron guys about the options Apop and Arkady suggested.

Ask for Mike at Brooklyn window and door. They have them. Pretty large selection.

I just added a screen to my backyard gate added by my iron guy. I can get a nice breeze and remain secure. The mesh is necessary so you can’t reach around and unlock the door.

I have a fairly plain iron gate going into the garden & I bought a screen that’s the same size as the frame of the gate. I used safety wire (as used on small motorcycle parts at race tracks) to wire the screen to the frame but you could use some other flexible & durable wire that doesn’t rust. Mine has been fine for 20 years or so. FWIW, I also had a channel forged onto the gate’s frame so I can slide a storm door into it for the winter. The screen stays year round.
