New Doors for Entire Brownstone

We purchased a shell with no original doors but the vestibule. Im 50/50 on going with MDF Trustile doors for every floor but the parlor, or going with solid wood doors. If you were in my shoes, what would you do, keeping cost in mind? If we decided to go the solid wood staining route, where would you purchase these doors from? I found a lot of places online that sell solid wood, 4/5 panel doors that would look appropriate, but don’t know the first thing about the quality. As always- Your help is greatly appreciated. This Blog has helped us tremendously on our project.

Hello, Im Josh From Heights Historic Windows and Doors and Trustile is a good company but there doors feel cheap. I distribute Upstate doors which offers solid wood doors as well as MDF doors. Thre prices are similiar to Trustile but there quality is much better. If you visit Sundorco.com you can get a better idea of what they offer. I also attached some info about the doors. http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/heightshistoric

No-permits, Thank you. Appreciate it… I had the contractor change some things on the window install. He didn’t have them sitting on the ledge and raised them up a hair and also straightened them out. They look much better. As far as the port a potty, no complaints. That’s just how these long island guys do it haha

I’ve used Trustyle before and they are good, but if you want solid wood doors for a decent price you could try Simpson doors. They have many style options as well as options for different wood species if you want to stain them. Dykes lumber can order them.

@stuyheights, what happened to the thread about your windows? did you delete it? i happened to go down the block today and couldn’t miss the port-a-potty outside and realized it was your place so i stopped to look. the windows look great and you should be satisfied with the job. have you had any issues with your neighbors about the port-a-potty outside?

@Adam – I second rebuilding your original doors. Old wood has a density to it that cannot be replicated. I had an entance door (2″ thick) rebuilt by a carpenter named Omar who has a studio in the Navy Yards (I think it’s called Artistic Woodworks). He did a beatiful job on that door. I’ll post his contact number next week when I return home. Good luck.

The Trustile mdf doors are really high quality… I bought 6 of them last year for my brownstone. I got 2 panel primed doors (slab only) for about $300 from S&E Building Materials. I got 1 with a frosted glass insert and that cost over $500… and then a couple of solid pine arch doors that ran $1200+ each, so the price can really go up quickly, the fancier you go. We went with 1 3/4″ on everything which was a splurge for sure but you can’t beat the solid feeling. Couple words of caution – even though they are highly engineered doors and we did seal them well, they do expand/shrink slightly with the extreme seasons we have in the northeast (despite my attempts to manage the humidity). I don’t know if that’s just the norm for all wood / wood core doors. The other thing is that they quoted us a lead time of 9 weeks and it turned out to be 12 weeks. Good luck!

anotherposter- Thank you We had no original doors to keep, so buying new is the only option. Since we need 30-35 doors, buying salvage isn’t an option either. We were never considering hollow doors and i couldn’t agree more that they play a huge roll in how the house looks and feels. We were considering a solid MDF door and going paint grade on every floor but the parlor, or just doing wood veneer doors throughout and staining them. Tough call – The very nice MDF doors such as Trustile aren’t cheap. They come in close to $500 a door. (or maybe that is cheap?)

@stuyheights, interior doors are a personal thing. I can’t stand the hollow-core ones and had all that were such in our place replaced when we were having a bigger job done. I don’t know much about the new doors or where they came from but they are wood and the feel and sound is much more acceptable to me than the cheap Home Depot specials we had before. If you can handle the cost, go for a better door. @adam, I agree with no-permits that you might be able to keep the doors. Most of these old doors actually have about a 1/4 inch veneer on the outside that can be replaced if the core is in decent shape. We just did this. I ended up using Vincent (Brownstone Wood Restoration). It’s not cheap but cheaper than getting new doors that are comparable to these very nice old ones.

@adam_dahill, your doors look repairable to me. even if they are rotted they can be rebuilt with a veneer added.

I bought a front door from these guys in Maine. It came totally stripped and holes filled. They have pretty nice stuff. Shipping I believe was just under $400\.

Amighini Architectural in Jersey City has a very very large inventory, although it may be pricier and you have to pay shipping to NYC.

I’m looking to find a replacement door for my house. The attached is what I currently have. Double door 50″in wide. Very common in my area. The bottom of the doors are shot and the detail has worn away over the years. Not really salvageable. I’ve checked BIG and Eddies a few months back. Any other places I should look? Anyone out there looking to sell a pair just like these? -Adam http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/adamdahill

if your looking to keep it period, go to ziborskis in kingston and buy old four panel doors, send them to dip n strip and then hang them. that will cost you about the same as a new door. if you want new doors, i just got some nice MDF four panel doors from lowes for a rental and they also had four panel pine doors. if you know what you’re doing with stain, it will come out fine.

Also, if you are considering a stained finish, forget about pine and poplar doors, what you would typically get as a new door. They don’t look great stained over the new wood.

Hi there StuyHeights, My name is Chris of Lombardi Carpentry. Generally when you see “Solid wood doors” they are not the entire species of wood throughout the door, they are a layer of the wood you have chosen and then all other woods in between. If you’d like solid wood doors such as Mahogany or any other wood I can make them, I am a cabinet maker. http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/lombardi
