Need help with installing pocket door locks

I bought reproduction hardward for 3 sets of pocket doors on my parlor floor. I tried having them installed, but I’ve run into a problem. Basically, the key hole doesn’t go deep enough into the door so it’s impossible to match up the cover plate unless I cut majorly into the door. Has anyone else run into this problem? Could a locksmith replace the body of the lock with a bigger one?

The hardware should slide deep inside the door from the end. If its not deep enough you will have to use a drill with a spade bit wide enough to make the cut.
