Exterior door referrals

http://cdn.brownstoner.com/4e1343c1b99f4-

Looking for referrals of good exterior door person. Do I hire a carpenter for this? Door person??

Pictured is the back door situation we are looking to solve. Current configuration is a heavy (and non-self-closing) steel exterior door with screen panel (converts to storm panel for winter). The interior door is wood opens into our kitchen and doesn’t close at all in the humid months; it also sticks out a bit into kitchen when left open.

I’d like to get: 1\. exterior storm/screen door that opens to yard and self-closes, and 2\. interior doors that open in and are split in half vertically (is this called french?) so they take up less space when left open, but are also secure when closed and locked. I like steel, bars on glass, or whatever works for that.

Anyone have advice on my proposed configuration? We got one estimate from a carpenter for $5700, which seems like about the appropriate price (I don’t know, is it?), but communication was patchy enough that I had no faith in our design decision or even what exactly we were going to get for the money…

More than likely anyone you hire is going to get a rack or custom sized door from one of the door companies.  Assuming there is no rotting/structural issues, installing a properly sized door is not a huge task.  You need to be sure that whomever is doing this is going to fix/replace matching interior and exterior trim, patch, etc.  The price of a door can vary widely in price, so it is diificult to gauge the proposed price.

You also might want to think twice about the idea of french doors.  Diffcult to tell from the picture, but it would appear that the door opening is not wide enough that you would easily be able to enter/exit a door half the width.  You are not likely to be satisfied if you need to open and close both sides of the door in order to enter/exit.  There may be other options that might address the issues cited, such as switching the direction of the opening, using a smaller door with sidelights, or even getting a door made with an operable sidelight such that you could open the full width if need be for moving/deliveries, etc.
