Some guy rang our bell today claiming to be from the HPD. He wanted to ask us a long list of questions. First he asked, do you have smoke detectors? Where are they located? Do you have young children in the building? What is your name?  I stopped him there. He said he was visiting all the houses in the neighborhood.  Does anyone know the purpose of this? Are they randomly looking for violations when no one has made any complaints? It just seems like an odd thing to do.

HPD stands for Housing Preservation and Development. They are the NYC enforcement agency that responds when someone calls 311 to complain of lead paint or lack of window guards, among other things.
