Do gas meters need to be in a room in the cellar? Mine is a two-family home (although previously a five-family). I would like to remove the wall around the one meter that is left. And are these really protected for some reason? There are gas pipes elsewhere and not enclosed.

In our cellar the room around the gas meters IS the cellar, so no – based on my understanding – you do not need to have a special room for your gas meters. Only for the boiler and hot water heaters.

A gas meter(s) needs to be at least 3 feet away from the electric meter(s), if they are closer, a wall is built to meet code requirements.

that might be the issue. I’ll measure the footage. Are you saying Jhcovert that the water heater and furnace need to be in a separate room in a 2-family?

And a wall would be required if less than 3 feet, not an entire room, right?

That is the case for us, but my comments are anecdotal and not based on any code I’ve read so do your homework. Our GC explained simply that it “was code” to have them separated in a mechanicals room. They also require a fresh air intake from the outside. They cannot vent into the cellar itself.

I believe a wall around the water heater and boiler (or furnace) is only required in buildings with more than two units. You say your building was once 5 units. If the CofO is still for five units, then they need to be walled off. If it’s for two then I do not believe they need to be in a separate room.

Correct, fire rated enclosure required for multi-family (3 and up) but not for 1 and 2.

You do not need gas meter room. Even multifamily buildings have gas meters exposed in the basement.
