Repainting the bedroom and thinking about painting the exposed gas pipes in a bedroom. They are currently unpainted. I am trying to find NYC building code. I only found that every 5 feet they have to be labeled in yellow on black GAS. This is for a 4 family, which often has more rules than two family.

You don’t want anything that could corrode the pipes. Possibly that may mean using oil paint. Takes a few days for the fumes to dry up. Until then, not recommended to be in the same room or anywhere you would breathe the fumes.

In case you will need gas line test, unpainted gas lines test 1/2 psi for 30 minutes. Painted lines 90 psi for 30 minutes. If you still want to paint them It must be yellow. Instead of painting you must label gas lines as per code requirement. That not a choice. It is mandatory requirement.

Maybe consider putting the pipe in a wall or boxing it in with drywall so it’s not exposed in the room. In that case you would just put a few labels on it before enclosing it.

The pipe doesn’t have to be yellow, only the label does. I’m certified under NYC’s new “Gas Operator Qualified” program and lots of stuff has changed. Gas piping is something of a nightmare and I strongly recommend thinking hard about not painting it.

That’s really helpful. My husband says this pipe is actually a special water pipe that we couldn’t paint. We do have a fire sprinkler system in every room. We didn’t paint this one red though. It was left unpainted.
The tenant really wants it painted. Any idea on the code?

The Code on painting fire suppression piping red only applies to the riser main up to the shut off valve. You don’t need to paint the horizontal branch pipes in your rooms.

In a similar vein as MDR indicated, just box the black pipes with some design ingnuity, such as incombustible & ventilating decorative screening, subsequently staying clear of oil paint fumes.

The pipe is too close to the sprinkler head and can’t be boxed. It is very industrial looking and it would be nice to paint it, but I prefer having things to code and not pay for issues down the road.
