kitchen ceiling drop code in multi family?

There is a code, it’s a smoke curtain, 12″ down from the clg.not sure how far off the counter but usually it would be around the perimter of the kitchen. I was once told it was not required if the bedrooms had doors. (this one particular project had a 6′ sliding japanese screen door to the bedroom, so they made me have it, but then I was allowed to use a nearby existing wood girder as a substitute. as a substiture

I need a little help …. is it mandatory to drop the ceiling in the kitchen area by 12″ in a 3 family for fire code?
How big is the area that needs to be dropped, how far does it have to extend from the kitchen counter?

I usually see the “drop arch” squaring off the area of the kitchen, with mechanical ventilation required. Not necessary with window, just interior location, to keep smole from spreading.
