Is $1650 a high price for a plumber to file a permit with D.O.B. to replace some unions on some pipes in my basement to my stove. It sounds like rip off. What are they basing that price off of?

In 2010, I was quoted about $1000 by a licensed plumber to file a permit with the city for installing a new gas line. So $1500 now sounds plausible.

He is shocked and amazed that a simple gas test and replacement of substandard gas work will cost him $1650…how dare a stupid lazy blue collar worker charge so much for so simple a job. Here is how to do a gas test legally: all connected to gas line appliances gas valves must be turned off. often it means moving gas stoves, driers and so on. Gas meter must be removed. After pressurizing gas line, it must stay under the pressure 30 minutes. If test is ok, plumber must pack and leave. He has to send request for inspection to plumbing division and wait for appointment, or he can set up self certification 2 days in advance. All this time gas line stays off. Then, plumber has to come at the appointment time, wait for inspector, and demonstrate the test to inspector for another 30 minutes. After that , if test ok, plumber packs and leave. and waits for gas authorization. After plumber gets gas authorization, he has to come back to install gas meter, open all gas appliances, bleed air and fill system with gas, fire up all appliances, check for proper operation, spray joints after the valves with leak detector. So we have 3 visits of the plumber and helper with truck full of tools and so on. Let’s say, he is superman, and you have 3 hours total spent on the job. Plus 1 hour driving to the job, looking for the parking each visit. total 6 hours. 2 people 12 man hours. divide 175 by 12 we have $14.50 per man per hour. Now, we need to deduct office rent, car insurance, gas, auto repair, people in the office salary, worker compensation , unemployment, disability, liability insurance, Shop rent and utilities. I want to stop here and say: STOP, I DO NOT WANT TO BE A PLUMBER, TO DO HEAVY DIRTY WORK FOR MINIMUM WAGE. In short : you do not have any respect to this plumber, and this is pity. 175? He is poor soul.

Check if your plumber is licensed himself. If not, he probably pays licensed plumber to do illegal cover up. He probably build his illegal fee to dishonest licensed plumber into permit cost. But $175 for job itself is ridiculously low number, Also, did he warn you about possibility of test failure and associated cost of replacing gas lines from meter to all appliances?

Explain where did they get the 1500 price from? Are you a plumber? I am not paying an expediter for $1500 to get a permit and what did they do for $1500 I need the services explained in detail.

I am lawyer and I know that it cost $45 to file any motion and no more than $500 to file a lawsuit. the other expenses are the cost of labor and knowledge but that fee is transparent to the customer when they use my services. It is not something mandatory from the city.

What is based on? I found it impossible that the City of New York wants $1500 to approve of a permit to pluming installation in a residential house.

$1500 is pretty much the baseline for permitted work including gas. Since the explosion in the east village the DOB and ConEd are up everyones bum when it comes to gaswork
