I would like to highly recommend the asbestos abatement contractor, Leinster Contracting.  Patrick is a very straight up individual and gave us a very reasonable quote to remove asbestos pipe insulation on our recently purchased brownstone.  His guys came in at 2 PM and were finished with all the work in less than 4 hours. They also performed an indoor air quality test.  I know some people have brushed aside the dangers of asbestos but having Patrick and his crew carefully remove it for us; has put us at a peace of mind. I had a different experience with Patrick. He came and looked at our basement as I was concerned we might have asbestos in the old ceiling. He immediately said with certainty that we did and he quoted us to remove it. I was all set to hire him until showing it to some other people and talking to neighbors etc, that it was probably not asbestos. I has a sample tested, and it was just plaster, not asbestos. I had a great first impression of him, and saw some good reviews on this site, so I was very disappointed when I found out it was not asbestos.

Caveat emptor. For $20 have a sample tested by KAM Labs in long Island City, Queens. It’s an inexpensive way not to get hustled.

For asbestos removal you are supposed to have an *independent* monitoring service company come in and do monitoring during removal, and so I got suspicious when Leinster wanted to recommend a monitoring company itself and then got scarce when I insisted on hiring my own monitoring company and doing the proper filings before removal.  In the end I hired Joe Mafucci who was definitely more expensive (perhaps 60% more) but I was more scared of the removal process than I was of leaving asbestos in our basement.  We’re six years later and I’m still a fan of Joe’s.  I hope Leinster is doing removal properly, but without an independent monitoring service, how will you know?
