Seeking Photos of Steel or Iron Decks for Inspiration
Hi, I am a designbuild firm that will both design (computer drawings) and build both steel (welding) and wood decking. I can be reached by email to show you my portfolio and make suggestions. We are a “turnkey” operation that will file permits (if you haven’t already) go through landmarks (if necessary) and design some clever options for rear yard decking. I can be reached at Noahsarc5914@aol.com. Noah….

I’m interested in seeing photos of steel, iron or other non-combustible rear decks for inspiration, as to how to make our planned 8’x8′ parlor floor deck, up to the property line, in a 3 family house, look nice and not like a fire escape. We have pets and young kids so want it to be very safe, want to be able to walk in bare feet, and have a smallish BBQ grill, small table and chairs, and some container garden plants on the deck, and perhaps some more containers going down the stairs. We will have stairs to the garden level, and the deck will be built partly over and to one side of an existing ground floor deck. But the decks I like are all iron with wood inlay, and if this whole thing has to be non-combustible I can’t picture it. So, I’d love to know who others used and how they made it work.

Have you looked on Houzz? We found some great pictures that have served as inspiration for our gut renovation, including photos of decks. Search for Ben Herzog deck – he has a beautiful example of a deck that is probably fairly close to what you are seeking in a renovation he did in Park Slope. It has wood slats, but the structure itself appears to be iron.

This isn’t the best picture. I’ll take more and send them, if you like. The house is a three family and each apartment has a porch, which can also function like a fire escape. The upper two porches are the width of the house, almost 19′, and are about 8′ deep. They are made of iron and concrete. Good luck with your back porch!

We built a steel and concrete deck then tiled with slate. Looks like you can’t add photos to a reply but contact me at orr.susan@gmail.com if you’d like a photo….

DaveinBedStuy, your deck is lovely, I’d be interested to know who did your deck. I’m also interested to know how you were able to do the wood slats including the privacy screen (which I love) since it’s combustible, and we have a legal 3-family so I was told we can’t use any wood (but I really want to), we’re permitting the job now but haven’t chosen a contractor or a designer yet (the expeditor did a basic drawing to get it permitted)

Sketch and Hammer did it. You are correct, if you are pulling permits, the privacy screen (and the planter boxes) can’t be there but can be added later. You can use wood on the decking up to 3′ of the property line, which is what mine is…with metal gates on each side. You can see in the second pic that the wood decking ends short of the entire deck width on both sides

We also a steel deck in our brownstone and I highly recommend Carlos who is specialized in iron work and he is very reasonable with his prices. Please see attached pictures. If interested you can reach him at 347-885-5965\. He fixed all our limbestone building including the backyard. Good luck

DaveinBedStuy, did Sketch and Hammer do the deck using drawings or did it just run with it? If it used drawings, were they architect drawings or did you just draw it out by hand? I don’t have an architect, am tempted to just let a deck person run with it once we get our permits, perhaps show them a photo from one of these posts as a guide
