roof deck attaching hardware
hey, thanks for the replies. I should have filled in more information to avoid going off topic like we have, I just didn’t want to clutter things up. 1) in my area, it’s common practice to span over the roof and attach above the brick walls, it satisfies code. 2) I plan to get all the proper permits, I’m basing my drawings on an approved set done a block away and I have a friend at an architectural firm who said he would review my drawings to make sure they’re good (but he does not want to draw them up for me) the drawings have been pretty easy compared with finding out what hardware to use. it’s not an easy thing to google and every fuckwitt on a forum always wants to run on the first tangent they find, instead of being helpful. so, if you have any ideas of what hardware is needed to fasten to a roof, I’d be very appreciative. thanks

hello all, I have designed a roof deck for my home (I’m an engineer, just not one that normally designs decks). I finished up all the drawings for the structure, but I’m not sure how to attach the posts to the existing roof. I’m going to span a 12ft roof and put the posts/footings on the shared wall. I could use some angle brackets but that does not seem great. I want something like a “Simpson strong-tie” but they are more for attaching a post to concrete. has anyone attached a deck through an existing roofdeck? Thanks

Roof Decks cannot be attached to the roof. They have to be attached to steel (Or fire a proof structure) beams running the full width of the building. So that in the event of a fire the deck does not come crashing down through the roof killing fireman trying to save the building! Get an architect to get it properly designed and approved, because you may well have issues with your insurance company without proper approvals.

If you don’t get permits / inspection and pay strict adherence to nyc building code, they will make you rip it down regardless of how smart you think you are. Unlike unpermitted renovations inside the house that inspectors can’t see / need access, decks can be seen plain as day from any neighbors building and will quickly make you undo it. A fireman passing by etc could report that construction asap if seen. NYC code and permits are critical. People who risk their lives are very sensitive to these things, as any of us would be.
