Re roof deck
Use of the roof deck? How often used by how many people? What is the existing structure currently designed for in terms of dead/live load? How many roof layers are currently installed? Is there moisture trapped between current layers? Is there insulation? Concrete on a roof? These are a few of the fundamental questions needed to approach this from the bottom up. I’m not an engineer or a roofer. I’d suggest you approach this in that order though, engineer then roofer. You may be looking at this from the top down and this needs to be approached from the bottom up. Roofers, are generally not engineers unless certified as such and even at that, this is a slight conflict of interest. I dont have a recommendation unfortunately but the recommendation I suggest you seek is an architect or engineer that specializes in roof systems design. I know this sounds over complicated. Thats because it is. The roof is probably the most important component of a building for a bunch of reasons, not the least of which is that it protects everything else. Dont wing this one. Best of luck Matt R www.nyc-hs.com

I currently have a roof patio/ deck that was added with shotty construction. I have been bandaiding leaking to room below for years and finally am looking into ripping out current roof patio ( roof paper with tile on top) with new material. I have had quotes from roofers who recommend tearing out existing roof patio and laying new roof with roof material , tar , etc. , then using moveable rubber pavers like in a playground on top. I just had another estimate from a contraction co that recommended ripping out existing roof patio and laying a special rubber down th covering that with 2 inches of cement then he rubber pavers … This sounds good to me but not sure which is a better construction idea, roof with rubber pavers or rubber, cement then rubber pavers to give a long lasting leak prof roof patio. Any feedback? Thanks!!

I would rather have a membrane put down, then install pedestal pavers on top such as; http://products.construction.com/Manufacturer/Duradek—Durarail–NST31464/products/PLAZADEK—Roofing-Approved-Membrane-Under-Pavers-or-Duck-Boards-NST57541-P If you were to add two inches of concrete, it is always going to remain wet as it will not be waterproofed, this will not be good for the membrane underneath, think freeze/thaw in winter. If there is another leak how are you going to find it without ripping up the concrete? Can your roof support the weight of the additional concrete? Pedestal pavers are the better (and cheaper) way to go. Pavers should never be installed directly on a roof membrane.
