Glass floor deck? Those with steel decks - do you have light blockage issues?

I built  a deck about 10 years ago, and It had a section of glass block (over the hot tub). My client took the initiative, and ordered it on his own. He said it was coming from Texas. I also did a deck with 3 sections of tempered glass. The glass was green tinted, about 1 3/8″ thick, and has a surface that was designed to prevent slipping. I don’t remember the fabricator, but it was in LIC, Queens. Steve@Urbanexteriors.biz   .

Hello everyone, I am in the beginning stages of planning to build a deck on the back of my house. My yard already faces North – not the best sun exposure. I am concerned about further blocking light from entering the house by putting an all metal deck above the windows. I know steel decks aren’t solid and let through some light, but it seems like it would still create a lot of blockage. What has been everyone’s experience? Because of that, glass flooring is something I am considering. Aside from practical reasons, I also love the look of it.  I got some quotes from glass companies – and I am lost. They seem to be offering similar product, (tempered glass that would take the weight of people and furniture), but their prices are very very different. Two companies (one offering 1″ thickness and the other 2″ – the 2″ would have a 1 /4″ tempered layer) quoted around $200-$250/sq ft just for materials (installation would be about as much per sq ft), and another company said around $60/sq ft (1/2″ thickness, all tempered) What gives? Are the $250 guys offering me something I could send to outer space (overkill) or are the $60 guys going to have me plummet to my death? Also, how do I know what I am getting? It all looks the same and it seems like they get it tempered themselves- there aren’t different products or manufacturers to compare. Please share your experience on glass decks and pricing and any useful contacts (glass suppliers) you might have.  Thank you as always!

I’m about to build out a deck off the parlor floor – my architect has found me the ideal solution, decking the main section with a open steel mesh, much the same idea as you see for subway grating on sidewalks.  It will admit plenty of light to garden level below, and unlike a glass deck, allow more air circulation too.

Have a look at McNichols for all the grating you could ever imagine.   http://www.mcnichols.com/products/grating/
