Deck Materials

We did ours as a steel deck with Ipe wood decking on top, and DOB was fine with it. You could also just put the wood decking down after the inspection as well… I agree – the three feet of metal on the side solution is just strange…

Hi, I’m building a deck off my second floor. Fully-attached house; deck will be going over (but not resting on) an extension off the first floor. NYC has said I can’t use wood or composite because I’m too close to the neighbors – no combustible materials. Does anybody have any suggestions for what we can use on the “floor” of this deck. I don’t want it to look like an oversized fire escape. Something attractive, good quality and affordable. Thanks!

The translucent green version, with long rectangualr openings would look nice in a garden, and your deck will outlast your house – www.fibergrate.com – zero mainenance and easy to use, too, if you are doing it yourself.

you can use metal the last 3ft of either side and timber in the other (middle) section. Search the archives this question has been asked/answered plenty.

Dear Sharon, you can use Aluminum Decking (Nextdeck or Lockdry) http://tiny.cc/ooi2hw I have worked with this type of decking and it has performed very well in locations where we cannot use IPE or Composite, this is what we would suggest

Thanks for the thoughts everybody! Regarding the metal on the sides, I’d actually seen an example of that on a contractor’s website (in their projects section). I was wondering if they did that style b/c of the NYC issue. My issue with this is that my deck will only be about 16 feet wide so it eats up some solid surface space. Of course, I’m not ruling it out though. Regarding aluminum, I just ordered samples of Lockdry materials today. People seem to really like it, but the costs people are talking about are scaring me a bit.
