Hi I am finally ready to get started on a steel deck from my parlor floor (I’ve asked several questions on this topic before) and am debating between a straight staircase and a spiral. The deck is going to be 12′ from the ground which seems to be higher than standard. Has anyone got a deck this high? And, if so, did you go wtih straight stairs, a stair with a landing in the middle or a spiral. Thanks!

I think it depends on the size of your yard and how you’re using it. I have straight stairs. It works well for us, we use it often. I wouldn’t go with a spiral unless you need to save space or don’t imagine using it all that often. I find going up an down spiral staircases with food and drink to be a pain. The dogleg is a good option if it fits well in the design of your yard.

The deck picture of the dogleg’ed staircase by Daveinbedstuy was built by Sketch & Hammer. AS an alternative to a pivotal staircase to save backyard space, we used Sketch & Hammer’s design and expertise, which was to INDENT the staircase into our deck on that 3′ inwardly margin by your lot line where the DOB won’t allow wood(CODE) all the way to our bldg.and came down straight…”eating up” 10 of the 13 steps needed. We saved 10 steps extending into our back yard.
