Step down/off -Metal Deck of Parlor Floor

We are Putting a deck off the parlor floor. Our dilemma… The step off the deck.  We have seen it flush to the inside parlor floor BUT we have also  been told that you should have a step down; Either 6 inches and up to 12 inches.  We are concerned how such a step down will look and function.  Does anyone have any experience or suggestion.  Sliding glass doors lead onto a rear deck  and one foot of galvanized grating. Is this step down really necessary for drainage???     Has anyone had experiences with leaks?  We were thinking more like 3 or 4 inch drop??

Hi – we put up a deck last summer off the parlor floor.  We pulled out a window and converted it to a hinged door, and we built the deck using pressure treated lumber, so our circumstances are a bit different than yours.  Our deck surface is about 3 inches below the threshold of the door.  Stepping inside/outside feels pretty natural.  The deck has been up for the big snows and rains of the last year and we’ve had no drainage issues.

I’m sure you have thought of this, but just in case:  when attaching deck your back wall be sure that you use proper flashing and sealing so that rainwater won’t seep into your wall.

Hope that helps
