ISO contractor

Hello all, I recently closed on a house and am trying to figure out the best way to go about the needed renovations. A few things I am going to take care of separately (aging lead water main; asbestos in basement; Yankee gutter repair) but am looking for a contractor to work on my renovation project which consists of renovating 2 full baths (and moving plumbing and wall about 14 inches), adding a powder room and rewiring the house as well as repair all the walls in the house (right now they are aging plaster walls, either with wallpaper or chunks of plaster missing or bulging). The contractors I am meeting with all seem to want to just take out the walls to have a clean slate and put up drywall. I would like to repair plaster where possible. Any and all suggestions welcome! Thanks Cate! How do I get in touch with Amzi Hill and Commodore Stephen Decatur? I have been going back and forth about whether I get someone in to pull the permit and do the bathrooms, closets and electrical and then get another person to close it up and do the plastering and painting and other finishing work (need some wood stripped, etc) or hire a GC to handle all of it.

Your instincts are excellent. There is absolutely no need to remove the walls and put up drywall. Not only will it probably cost you more in the long run but you will lose the trim. Plus plaster is so much better than drywall — mold can’t grow in it, it muffles sound better, looks better, etc. Unfortunately, I cannot make recommendations because I work for Brownstoner. Ask Amzi Hill or Commodore Stephen Decatur on this site if they could recommend someone. Obviously you want to skim coat after all the plumbing and wiring is taken care of, and any wood stripping too, but before you refinish the floors. Here is the basic skimcoating method that works: They paint the plaster with a thin coating of that pink stuff, called Plaster-Weld, then they apply mesh tape to the surface. Then they do three thin coats of plaster, allowing the correct drying time between coats. If they use the mesh, the cracks will not return. (Filling big holes or reparing sags involve different methods, but if they can do the former they can do the latter.) I think you’re looking for a plasterer and not a contractor — though you might be looking for a contractor and finish carpenter who understands old house issues such as sagging ceilings, matching old floors and moldings, and stripping wood.
