EXTERIOR WALL SOUNDPROOFING BETWEEN BUILDINGS

Does anyone have any experience and/or thoughts about GREEN GLUE http://www.greengluecompany.com and QUIET ROCK http://www.quietrock.com Are there other better and more efficient ways to soundproof walls? We need soundproofing between our Brownstone and the two neighboring ones

Interesting point about the joist pockets. I was always wondering why they left them open when the houses were built. My uneducated guess was (until now) that it reduces noise transmission from foot traffic if they are loose instead of being connected to the sidewall

just to reiterate you want mass in an airtight way and the best you can do is add sheetrock. You can surely use quiet rock which just has a piece of metal inside it, or just several layers of sheetrock. No need for green glue really, while it decouples vibrations as the other poster said your weakest link after two or three sheets of drywall will probably be the joist pockets. fyi Joist pockets need space around them for fire code, so that when a building burns down the joists fall freely to the inside of the building instead of heaving the brick and bringing the wall down / spreading the fire to more buildings. That’s not to say that you can’t use some firestop caulk around them, but there is no sense making a fortress out of the walls when you have roomy joist pockets beneath your floor / ceiling. So both is obviously ideal, but i wouldn’t do more than two or three layers of sheetrock w/o addressing the other weakest links, which ultimately determine how soundproof your house is.

Mass loaded vinyl is very effective and takes up very little space. Roxul helps and if you build a wall it should be used, but it is the least effective of quieting materials. Quietrock works well especially the more expensive sheets. Greenglue works too but requires more labor. Before you work on the walls you should know that most often in these old shared walls the biggest problem is at the joist pockets where there are often actual openings between the buildings causing large sound and odor leaks into the ceiling and the walls. To correct this you need to patch those holes or sound proof your ceiling as well. You may or may not get good results soundproofing the wall only.

Using greenglue or Quietrock directly on a wall will not give you much better results over thick Sheetrock alone. These products are good at stopping vibration on a separated wall, and they are used to add efficiency mostly in assemblies that involve also other noise blocking products. The way for you: build a partition couple inches out from the wall, and adding a layer of Roxul behind it while still keeping an air gap to the wall. You´ll hear nothing. If you´re a multifamily don´t forget about noise transmission between floors, that´s level 2 🙂
