Hallway as storage

We own a brownstone with two other families. We are on the top floor of the building. We use the tiny space outside our apartment for hanging coats, storing shoes, and other things. Our thought process was that no one ever passes by our doorway, our clutter is unseen and does not get in anyone’s way but our own. I don’t feel great about it and I didn’t when we began doing it. Our downstairs neighbors who own the two bottom floors have installed hooks for coats on both floors, as well as leaving shoes, umbrellas, boots, etc in the hall. They also store scooters, helmets, stroller sometimes skateboards. On the one hand I feel I have no right to request they put it away as we use the outside of our doorway although they never need pass by our door. I understand the lack of space we all have and would allow stroller, scooters places away from the entrance way but to use the common space for all of their outerwear storage seems excessive. I would appreciate so much to hear this community’s thoughts so that I have some perspective before I talk with them. I am aware it is a fire hazard (at least i imagine it is) as is the stuff outside our apartment as well. We bought the building together so the rules and regulations are a little foggy.

It would seem that you’ve already figured out the answer to this problem. The rules have to apply to all equally. Aren’t three family buildings subject to inspection by the FDNY?? If so, you’re going to be fined.

I feel like you answered your own question within your post. If your neighbor’s behavior bothers you, then don’t do the exact same thing you find bothersome.

yes, and while you say noone walks by your space, is the access to the roof outside your door in your hallway, whereby your stuff might be blocking the way when it really matters, that is, when people might be trying to get out via the roof in case of a fire…

Aside from being part of safety code, I make it clear to my tenants that anything left in the halls for more than a few days is assumed to be garbage and will be thrown out. In your case you’re a part owner, but the hallway isn’t just some common space, it’s a restricted space for safety reasons. You should *all* be emptying out your hallways. If not just from the safety sense, then social.. at the very least, hallway storage makes you look like a pig.
