Getting Cat Pee Smell Out of Masonry

A neighborhood cat has unfortunately sprayed the area under my stoop stairs.  It’s smelled bad for a couple of months now, so simply waiting and airing it out will not do the trick.  I’m afraid that when it gets hot this summer the smell will be unbearable.  Most of the “remove cat odor” products on the market are for things like upholstery.  Any suggestions for the best DIY way to clean/deodorize masonry?  I’m thinking I’ll just have to scrub the heck out of it and hose it down (on a warm, dry day) but I’m unsure which cleaning solution to use.  Thanks for all advice.

Third vote for Natures miracle or another enzyme based cleaner. You have to soak the area and give it time, but it really works.

vinegar is also a good bet. dont use ammonia unless you want to compound the smell of the cat piss which already smells like ammonia.  The nature’s miracle is also a great product.

Try scrubbing the area with a mixture of bleach, water, and a small amount of dish soap. If they keep spraying, repeat the treatment. Good luck.

BE careful!!  Snowman is right.  Mixing ammonia and bleach (with water) is one of the chemicals Nazis used for deadly purposes:   Household bleach is 5% sodium hypochlorite. Mix it with ammonia and mono- and di-chloramines are formed. These nasty fellows will cause lovely symptoms such as respiratory tract irritation, tearing, and nausea. To make things better, add water to get hydrochloric acid and nascent oxygen- also known as chlorine gas, the chemical weapon of choice of Nazi Germany in World War II- for the added bonus of drowning in your own fluids! “

 Neutron Industries in Arizona has a product called D-Molish.  When used according to the directions, D-Molish will eat the particles left in the brick.   This product is made for this purpose.
