Need help with sealing a stone (slate) mantle

http://cdn.brownstoner.com/503aa3f497e15-.jpg

Hello everyone! We have 4 beautiful/original mantels (see picture attached) that have been stripped to the original detail a while ago and are now at a point where we would like to finish the project with a nice sealing job. Is this something we should tackle on our own? Any recommendations for good cleaning/sealant products?  Alternatively, can you recommend a specialist who can help us with this project? Thanks!

How nice! I like the excised detailing. I have slate surrounds on my fireplace, which I’ve never sealed and it seems fine. Are you sealing because the stone looks a little dried out from the paint removal? People treat slate countertops with mineral oil, which you could easily do yourself. For floors I’ve heard of polyurethane being used, but that seems unnecessary for mantels. There are a bunch of rub on products for stone at Lowes and Home Depot. I had something for that was supposed to be ideal for marble, but I never could tell any difference. If I were you I’d try mineral oil on a small area and see if you get the result you want.
