Contractor to handle removal of marble mantel

I’m looking for a company to handle the removal of an installed marble mantel (to be reused at another location in the house.) Our GC is not comfortable removing it from the current fireplace as he says they can be fragile and he doesn’t want his guys to be responsible for it (fair enough.) The fireplace sub will handle the installation, but doesn’t deal with removing the mantel from the current fireplace. We’ve got some recommendations for marble companies, but I believe most of them deal in installing or fabricating new, not removing the old one. Once it’s remove and in pieces, the GCs will move it around accordingly as they work on the rest of the renovation. Anyone have any recommendations for someone to remove the mantel? It doesn’t seem like a huge job, but the mantel is original to the house and it’s an important piece to us. Thanks, brownstoners!

I had the opposite problem, my contract was not comfortable installing marble so we had Manny LaSalle do it. He is pretty much the local expert in marble mantles and usually does installation but I imagine could take a look and see if he can take your mantle out. It will depend heavily on if it was installed properly – if it was glued on they won’t be able to guarantee removal with out cracking.

We used Foro Marble to remove, clean and re-install two original marble fireplace surrounds in our house. I’d highly recommend them.

Over the years I have moved a couple of marble mantels from one room in a house to use in another area of the house and I have never had an issue with the contractor hired to reline and restore the fireplaces being able & willing to take it out and move it to the new position. Most contractors; I would have thought would want to make sure that all the parts are properly removed and logged for the new positioning.

I’ve talked to two fireplace contractors and neither wanted to remove the mantel (but would install it on the fireplace they’re working on.) Is this typically a service a fireplace restoration company would offer? Regardless, if they’re not comfortable with it I’d rather not ask them to do it… it’s in pretty good shape now and has the metal surround and everything and I’d rather not see it broken because I tried to force someone ill-equipped into working with it.

Tell your fireplace contractor to quit being a pussy and take responsibility for removing it from the existing location. This being said….expect them to charge you “a risk premium” unless you say to them that you’ll cover replacing the damaged pieces that break as it comes off the wall. This being said my advice call Manny laSalle.
